Environmental gradients reveal stress hubs pre-dating plant terrestrialization

Using a two-dimensional gradient table to expose the streptophyte alga Mesotaenium endlicherianum to a continuous grid of temperature (8.6–29.2 °C) and irradiance (21–528 µmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹), the authors generated 128 transcriptomes across 42 conditions and identified core stress-response hubs shared with land plants — molecular programmes that have persisted for more than 600 million years of streptophyte evolution.
